Our process of barrel or pit-firing ceramics involves first bisque firing the stoneware, turning the raw clay vessels into ceramics. Once fired, the objects are placed into a barrel or pit, along with fuel such as dry wood, straw and sawdust, alongside organic materials such as seaweed, coffee grounds or salt, or inorganic compounds such as cobalt carbonate, sodium, and iron oxide.

The fire is then ignited, slowly descending through the chamber. As the fire reacts with the objects and the additives, the chaotic combination of flame and heat produces unique and randomised patterns of reaction and colour. This technique allows for the fire to dictate the final finish, as if itself a potter, directly influencing the outcome.
