Hand-Painted
Wheel-thrown ceramics that are delicately hand-painted with slip, underglaze, overglaze and lustre
Early in the process, before the clay has been fired, coloured slips may be brushed onto the absorbent surface, applying designs immutably onto the raw clay. After bisque firing, engobes, underglazes and glazes are laboriously applied to the fired surface as one would apply paint to canvas. Once fired in a glaze firing, these patterns and marks become indelible, created in glass formed during the firing and allowing the previously unseen colours to shine.
After glaze firing, overglazes and lustres may be applied during yet another round of decoration. These finishes are applied directly to the glazed surface before the vessel undergoes the final firing of the process, completing the design and manifesting intent.
